What Firearm Assembly Means for an FFL Manufacturer

How assembly, manufacturing, gunsmithing, and recordkeeping can differ.

EC Enterprises provides gunsmithing, FFL transfers, firearm manufacturing, and precision machining in Avilla, Indiana.

Firearm assembly can be ordinary reassembly, gunsmithing, alteration, or licensed manufacturing depending on the receiver, parts, ownership, work performed, and resulting firearm. EC Enterprises must classify the actual project before accepting it.

A Type 07 FFL authorizes licensed manufacturing activities, but each project still requires the applicable acquisition, disposition, marking, transfer, and other records.

Start with the controlled receiver or firearm

Identify who owns it, how EC receives it, its existing markings and configuration, and whether the requested work creates or changes a firearm for regulatory purposes.

Separate parts assembly from project responsibility

A customer parts list does not establish compatibility, lawful configuration, manufacturing classification, or who is responsible for required markings and records.

Approve the complete deliverable

Define supplied parts, machining and fitting, coatings or outside processes, records, function checks, test fire, return recipient, and any configuration limitations.
