SAAMI defines headspace as the distance from the closed breech face to the chamber surface that stops the cartridge case. The controlling surface differs among rimmed, belted, rimless-shouldered, and case-mouth designs.
Headspace is a dimensional relationship in the assembled firearm. A cartridge fitting in the chamber or a bolt closing does not by itself verify it.
Why the cartridge design matters
Different cartridge designs locate on different case features. The correct chamber drawing, gauges, bolt, barrel, locking system, and measurement method must match the actual firearm.
When headspace should be checked
Barrel installation, bolt changes, receiver or locking-part work, uncertain prior modifications, damage, and relevant symptoms can make verification part of the approved scope.
What a check does not guarantee
A headspace result answers a defined dimensional question. It does not automatically prove ammunition compatibility, firing-pin condition, locking integrity, bore condition, or overall safe function.
