A barrel is thick enough to thread only when its finished muzzle location leaves suitable thread geometry, wall thickness, indexing support, alignment, and material condition for the exact device. Outside diameter and caliber alone cannot approve the work.
Use measurements to screen a project, then have the actual barrel, bore, profile, and device inspected before machining.
Measure the geometry that will actually remain
Measure the barrel where the finished threads, relief, and shoulder will exist after any shortening or crown work. On a tapered barrel, a measurement farther back or forward can give a misleading answer.
- Record groove or bore diameter for the actual cartridge.
- Use the smallest thread-root or undercut diameter—not the major diameter—when screening remaining wall.
- Check the available straight length and the diameter at the proposed shoulder.
Wall thickness is only one acceptance point
Adequate calculated wall does not establish bore concentricity, material integrity, device clearance, or a usable indexing surface. Existing sights, pins, welds, steps, flutes, and interrupted profiles can also change the setup.
Why unusual profiles can cost more
A straight loose barrel is usually simpler to indicate and support. Tapered, short, pinned, welded, barreled-action, or complete-firearm configurations can require added fixturing, indicating, disassembly, setup, and verification.

What minimums does EC use to screen a rifle barrel?
EC uses a 0.050-inch minimum radial shoulder and 0.100-inch minimum radial barrel wall. Wall is calculated from the smallest finished thread root or undercut—not the thread major diameter. The exact device and inspection still control approval.
Does the calculator approve my barrel?
No. It screens entered dimensions and cannot inspect bore location, material, profile, or the actual device.
Can shortening reach a larger diameter?
Sometimes, if barrel length, contour, legal limits, and the complete project permit it. Inspection is required.
